Units and block of the cathedral window placemats

This is the classic method to make cathedral window technique. Make the units folding the piece of fabric twice.

After finishing the units, line them up and make the window frame. You can sew it by machine or by hand.

Check the Cathedral window quilt course: triangular units for a step-by-step tutorial to make the units and you will also find the templates for the units and the windows to free download them. In addition, a video tutorial will help you too!

Cathedral window quilt triangular units

Materials (for one placemat):

1/2 yards of muslin for the bases and the back (42” width)
8″ x 16″of blue cotton
8″ x 16″of purple cotton
Scraps of floral cotton in blue, purple, and white.

Size: 9″ x 9″

These are the units you need to make the placemat. The next scheme will help you place every unit in its correct place.

Make 8 triangular units and place the pieced insert. Join two units with the fronts facing and sew by hand or align them and sew by machine with a zigzag stitch. The corners of the window frames must match. Make the mandala with the units.

Remember you will find all the templates and the instructions to make and join the units here: Cathedral window quilt course: triangular units.

Windows plan

Cut the windows with the templates and place them over the base.

Secure all the layers of fabric with pins and start applying the windows. Check the “Applying the windows” section for a step-by-step explanation.

The photo will guide you to find the place of every window.

Finishing the placemat

Cut one piece of muslin, with the same shape as the placemat and add 1/2 inch for seam allowance. Place the placemat onto it. Fold the border to the inside and sew with an invisible stitch.
