Blue and white cathedral window flanged cushion
To make this project you will use the “Fold and sew” method, “Squares” version.
This means that you will cut pieces of fabric and then make the units. Every unit has a base and two folded pieces placed over it. Each unit forms a side of the window frame.
This is the unit you need to make the cushion. The next scheme will help you place every unit in its correct place.
1 yard of blue fabric (42” width)
1 yard of muslin (42″ width)
A piece of 19×19 inches of muslin.
Preferred stuffing material
Size: 22″ x 22″
To make the block
Prepare the pieces for the units. Cut all the bases in blue and the folded pieces in muslin. Remember that each unit has a base and two folded pieces placed over this base.
Cut 100 square bases (2 1/8 inches – 5,5 cm) in blue and 200 squares (2 1/8 inches – 5,5 cm) for the folded pieces in muslin.
Place the folded pieces over the base and sew the unit.
Join the units and sew to make the base of the front of the cushion.
Applying the windows
Cut a piece of muslin to backing the cushion front. Cut the windows in muslin with the templates and place them over the base. Secure the three layers of fabric with pins and start applying the windows. Check the “Applying the windows” section for a step-by-step explanation and video tutorial.
Trim the borders.
The flanged borders
Prepare four strips of blue cotton to make the border of the cushion.
Join and sew the short strips of blue cotton to the right and left border of the cathedral window base. Now, join and sew the long strips to the top and bottom borders. Press well.
Finishing the cathedral window flanged cushion
Cut two pieces of blue cotton for the back of the cushion that measure 22,5 x 18″. Fold and sew the border that will be the opening. Place them over the front part, right sides together. Sew all around. Turn right side out.
Sew through all the layers of fabric by the border of the cathedral window base. The blue border will not be filled.
